Hardware-as-Regularization: Enhancing Data Consistency in Imitation Learning via an Adjustable Passive Compliant Leader Arm
A roughly $100 spring module that pulls each joint of a hobby-grade teleoperation arm back toward a set posture doubled the success of the robot policies trained on its demonstrations in a block-stacking task, 73.3% against 36.7% with the same arm without springs. The preprint from SB Intuitions in Japan shows that cleaner demonstration data can come from mechanics rather than more expensive motors.
