About

Formant was founded in 2017 by former roboticists from Google and Savioke and is based in San Francisco. Jeff Linnell is founder and chief executive, and lead investor BMW i Ventures also names James Turnshek, chief architect, and Kate MeLynda, president, as founders. Its cloud data and operations platform helps robotics companies deploy, scale and manage their fleets, and in 2023 it added an AI language interface called Theopolis. The company says its platform powers tens of thousands of production robots and names Knightscope, Scythe, Burro, BP and John Deere subsidiary Blue River Technology among its customers. On October 11, 2023 Formant announced the completion of a $21 million funding round led by BMW i Ventures, with new investors Intel Capital and GS Futures and previous investors SignalFire, Hillsven, Pelion Ventures, Holman, Ericsson, Goodyear Ventures, PICUS Capital and Thursday Ventures. The release did not give the round a series name and reported revenue growth of more than 500% year over year. SignalFire says it led Formant's earlier $6 million seed round and $18 million Series A.
