About

Ghost Robotics was founded in 2015 in Philadelphia by Avik De, Gavin Kenneally and Jiren Parikh. De and Kenneally built the company while doing PhDs at the University of Pennsylvania's GRASP Lab under roboticist Daniel Koditschek, after concluding that existing legged robots relied on costly, fragile and non-standard parts. They spent several years on proprietary actuators and control systems; the first product was the Minitaur, which the company calls the first direct-drive legged robot. Its main line today is the Vision 60, a quadrupedal unmanned ground vehicle, or Q-UGV, built for unstructured terrain and sold to government and enterprise customers, and the company has added a manipulator arm for it. Kenneally was co-founder and chief executive at the time of the 2024 deal. In January 2025 Ghost Robotics and Boston Dynamics said they had resolved their patent lawsuits. On 29 July 2024 the company and LIG Nex1, a South Korean defence electronics and weapons-systems group, announced the close of LIG Nex1's purchase of a 60 percent controlling stake for 240 million dollars, a price the release said valued Ghost Robotics at 400 million dollars. The release does not describe the figure as a post-money valuation, and the purchase is an acquisition of existing shares rather than a funding round, so no round is recorded. Earlier venture financings are not documented on a primary page.
