US Section 232 on robots explained: what is covered, the 180-day clock, who is exposed

The US has formally found that imports of robots, industrial machinery and their parts threaten national security, but it has not imposed a tariff. Under the Oct 28, 2026 proclamation, Commerce and the US Trade Representative must report on negotiations with trading partners within 180 days, by about April 26, 2027, and tariffs, quotas or fees remain possible if no agreement is reached. MEKAWIRE explains the legal steps from the government documents, what the investigation covers, and which robot makers in our database are exposed by country.

FANUC, Yaskawa and Hitachi pair with Nvidia as Japan's AI start-ups raise little

Japan is building physical AI through alliances between its industrial incumbents and foreign AI platforms, not through a venture-funded start-up wave. Of 121 robotics funding events MEKAWIRE has recorded in 2026, one is Japanese, while FANUC, Yaskawa, Kawasaki, Hitachi and Fujitsu signed at least five physical-AI partnerships with Nvidia, Google, Agile Robots and each other between July and September. In October Mitsubishi Electric and ABEJA began building model layers at home on the machine-tool floor, and KDDI launched ELYZA Robotics with JPY 30 billion of R&D through fiscal 2030. The open question is who will own the robot models.
