- Stryker puts about $400M into CMR Surgical and takes an exclusive option to buy the Versius maker outright
Stryker and CMR Surgical said in a joint press release on Oct 12 that Stryker will make a preferred equity investment of about $400 million (£300 million) in the Cambridge, England, surgical robot maker, a stake that also gives Stryker an exclusive option to acquire 100% of CMR's equity later on terms the companies did not disclose. Stryker becomes the exclusive U.S. sales agent for the Versius soft-tissue robot, while CMR keeps development and commercialisation outside the United States, and Stryker's Group President for Medsurg and Neurotechnology, Andy Pierce, joins CMR's board. Pierce said Stryker had studied soft-tissue robotics for years and chose Versius for its fit in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centres; the deal still needs regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. In MEKAWIRE's funding records, CMR's last disclosed priced amount was a $600 million Series D in June 2021, and its April 2025 equity-and-debt package carries no disclosed figure, so Stryker's cheque is the largest disclosed inflow into the company in five years.
Mentioned - Korea classifies EndoRobotics' endoscopic surgery robot as a National Core Technology ahead of its Olympus-backed US launch
EndoRobotics said in a press release on Oct 6 that Korea's trade ministry (MOTIR) determined on Oct 1 that the core technology of its ROBOPERA flexible endoscopic surgical robot falls under the National Core Technology framework, in the category covering design, manufacturing and control of laparoscopic, endoscopic and image-guided surgical robots. National Core Technology is designated and managed by the government under the Act on Prevention of Divulgence and Protection of Industrial Technology, the release noted. ROBOPERA attaches robotic instruments to a standard endoscope so gastrointestinal lesions can be removed through the mouth or anus without an incision; it received FDA 510(k) clearance in 2025, and the company said it signed an exclusive global distribution deal with Olympus in May 2026 and is in final preparations for a U.S. launch in the second half of 2026. EndoRobotics is the first Korean endoscopic surgery robot maker in MEKAWIRE's database, where Intuitive Surgical anchors the surgical-robot category.
