Iron Ox
San Carlos, California grower that runs robotic greenhouses producing leafy greens and herbs with automation and AI.
Iron Ox was founded in 2015 by chief executive Brandon Alexander and Jon Binney, who came from Google and Willow Garage, and is based in San Carlos, California. It grows produce such as lettuce and basil in greenhouses run with robotics and AI, and says the approach yields 30 times more per acre than field farming with 90 percent less water. Its produce has been sold at Whole Foods stores across California and at Bay Area grocers Bianchini's and Mollie Stone's Markets. A Form D filed on January 3, 2018 reported $4,956,860 of equity sold to 23 investors, and two Form D filings in 2019 reported further equity sales of $13,197,920 and $6,999,997. On September 9, 2020 it announced a $20 million Series B led by Pathbreaker Ventures and family offices, taking total funding to $45 million, alongside a greenhouse in Gilroy, California. On September 22, 2021 it closed a $53 million Series C led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, bringing its total to $98 million, and said it would break ground that year on a 535,000 square foot indoor farm in Lockhart, Texas.
