Medical Microinstruments (MMI)
Jacksonville, Florida maker of the Symani Surgical System, a robotic platform for open soft tissue microsurgery with research and manufacturing in Pisa, Italy.
Medical Microinstruments, known as MMI, was founded in 2015 near Pisa, Italy, redomiciled to the United States in 2022 and is headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida, while keeping its research, development and manufacturing hub in Pisa. Its Symani Surgical System is a robotic platform for open soft tissue microsurgery, including microvascular, lymphatic and peripheral nerve repair. Symani was CE marked in Europe first, and in April 2024 the FDA granted it De Novo authorization, which MMI said made it the only commercially available platform in the US for reconstructive microsurgery, with uses including breast reconstruction after mastectomy, extremity reconstruction with free tissue transfer and lymphatic repair. Mark Toland was chief executive at the time of the Series C. In July 2022 MMI announced a $75 million Series B led by Deerfield Management, with new investors RA Capital Management and Biostar Capital and existing investors Andera Partners, Fountain Healthcare Partners, Panakès Partners and Sambatech. In February 2024 it raised $110 million in a Series C led by Fidelity Management & Research Company with existing investors including Andera Partners, BioStar, Deerfield Management, Fountain Healthcare Partners, Panakès Partners, RA Capital, Sambatech and Wellington Partners, taking total funding to more than $200 million.
