About

Vicarious Surgical was founded in 2014 by MIT-affiliated engineers Adam Sachs, Sammy Khalifa and Barry Greene and is headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts. It is developing the Vicarious Surgical System, a single-port robot with human-like arms and camera designed to virtually transport surgeons inside the patient for minimally invasive surgery, with ventral hernia repair as its first target indication and a planned De Novo request to the FDA. The company says it was the first surgical robot to receive FDA Breakthrough Device Designation, and it was accepted into the FDA's Safer Technologies Program in February 2024. In its annual report for 2025 it said the system had not been authorized or commercialized, that an IDE application for a pivotal human study had not yet been submitted, and that it needed to raise more money to remain a going concern. Vicarious went public through a business combination with the SPAC D8 Holdings, approved by shareholders on September 15, 2021 and closed on September 17, 2021, which the company said delivered $220 million in gross cash proceeds, including a $142 million PIPE whose investors included BD, Bill Gates, Khosla Ventures, Innovation Endeavors, Sun Hung Kai & Co. and E15 VC. Its shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange as RBOT. In August 2023 it priced a public offering of 45,000,000 shares at $1.00 for gross proceeds of approximately $45.0 million, with Morgan Stanley and Cowen as joint book-running managers. It carried out a 1-for-30 reverse stock split in June 2024, and in October 2025 priced a registered direct offering with gross proceeds of approximately $5.9 million through Lake Street Capital Markets. The stock was delisted from the NYSE on March 3, 2026 and now trades over the counter under RBOT.
