Gachon University Gil Hospital said on Oct 19 it will build Korea's first AI and robot-based smart orthopaedics department, linking AI X-ray diagnosis, robotic joint-replacement surgery and app-based rehabilitation, under agreements with Connecteve, Allthocare, EverEx, Stryker and CGBio. The robot model was not named.

Gachon University Gil Hospital in Incheon said on Oct 19 that it will build what it calls Korea's first "smart orthopaedics" department, linking diagnosis, surgery and rehabilitation with AI and robots, and that it signed agreements the same day with five companies: Connecteve, Allthocare, EverEx, Stryker and CGBio. The hospital's statement was carried by Yonhap News; MEKAWIRE did not find it on the hospital's own press page. No investment amount, timeline or patient target was given.

The plan has three steps, according to the statement. For diagnosis, AI will read knee and lower-limb X-rays to assess joint condition. For surgery, the hospital will bring in a joint-replacement robot that builds a patient-specific plan from 3D CT images, then uses a robotic arm and haptic technology to cut bone precisely. For rehabilitation, patients will follow personalised exercise programmes on mobile devices. Hospital director Kim Woo-kyung said the department would lead future care built on AI and robots.

Which robot, and why the partner list matters

The statement did not name the surgical robot or say which company supplies which step. Stryker is the only global robot maker on the list; its Mako system is a robotic-arm joint-replacement platform that works from CT-based plans and haptic boundaries, which matches the description, but the hospital has not confirmed the model. The other four are Korean companies, and the statement grouped all five as medical software and medical robot specialists, so the deal reads as a care pathway assembled around one imported robot rather than a domestic robot win.

That fits a pattern in MEKAWIRE's data. Intuitive had 11,710 da Vinci systems installed worldwide at the end of June, and the money behind challengers now comes mostly from medtech incumbents, as in Stryker's roughly $400 million investment in CMR Surgical on Oct 12 ([MEKAWIRE explainer](/news/surgical-robots-market-2026-explained-11710-da-vinci-systems-8400-surgical-robots-sold-challengers-backed-by-medtech-giants-20261017); [Stryker and CMR](/news/stryker-400m-cmr-surgical-versius-option-to-acquire-20261012)). In orthopaedics, robot makers such as Stryker also sell the implants the robot places.

MEKAWIRE analysis

The news is the bundle, not the robot: a Korean teaching hospital is buying an end-to-end orthopaedic workflow in which the robot is one link.

If AI X-ray reading and app-based rehabilitation feed outcome data back to surgeons, the hospital gets something a robot alone does not: measurable results per patient. The counter-argument is that "Korea's first" is the hospital's own claim and that integration across five vendors is where such projects stall. Watch for the robot model and first case date, any outcome data the hospital publishes, and whether Korean makers such as Curexo win similar hospital-wide contracts.
