Cambridge, UK developer of the Versius robotic surgical system for minimal access soft tissue surgery, now cleared in the US as Versius Plus.
CMR Surgical was founded in 2014 and is based in Cambridge, UK. It develops the Versius surgical robotic system for minimal access soft tissue surgery and its enhanced version, Versius Plus, and said in March 2026 that more than 45,000 patients had been treated with Versius in more than 30 countries. The US FDA granted marketing authorization for the next-generation Versius system in October 2024 and 510(k) clearance for Versius Plus in December 2025 for cholecystectomy in adults, and the company made its formal US debut at SAGES 2026 before submitting a further 510(k) application in April 2026 to extend Versius Plus into gynecology. Massimiliano Colella became chief executive in January 2025. In September 2019 CMR announced a Series C of £195 million, which it put at $240 million, with existing investors LGT, Escala Capital Investments, Cambridge Innovation Capital, Watrium and Zhejiang Silk Road Fund and new US investors it did not name. In June 2021 it raised $600 million (£425 million) in a Series D led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2 and co-led by Ally Bridge Group, which the company said valued it at $3 billion. In April 2025 it announced more than $200 million in combined equity and debt from existing investors and Trinity Capital, which said it had committed $68.75 million in growth capital.
