Intuitive Ion tops 10,000 robotic bronchoscopies in Europe since 2023 CE mark
Clinicians in Europe have performed more than 10,000 robotic-assisted bronchoscopies with Intuitive's Ion system since its CE mark in 2023, the company said on Oct 19. More than 1,000 Ion systems are installed worldwide and were used for over 140,000 lung biopsies in 2025, so three years of European use equal about 7% of one year's global volume.
Three years after it was cleared for sale in Europe, Intuitive's lung-biopsy robot has passed 10,000 procedures on the continent. Clinicians across Europe have used the Ion endoluminal system for more than 10,000 robotic-assisted bronchoscopies since its CE mark in 2023, Intuitive (NASDAQ: ISRG) said in a press release issued from its UK base in Reading on Oct 19.
The number sounds large until it is set against the company's own global figure. More than 1,000 Ion systems are installed in hospitals worldwide and were used for more than 140,000 lung biopsies in 2025 alone, the company said. Europe's three-year total is about 7% of a single year's global volume, which tells us more about where Ion's market still is than about how far it has come.
What Ion does that a manual bronchoscope cannot
Ion is a robotic, catheter-based platform whose first cleared use is minimally invasive biopsy in the lung. Its ultra-thin, shape-sensing catheter can articulate 180 degrees in all directions and is designed to reach deep into the peripheral lung, so that clinicians can sample small nodules in narrow airways and hold the biopsy tool steady, which Intuitive says manual bronchoscopy cannot match. The company argues this can shorten the period of watchful waiting in which a suspicious nodule is tracked on scans without a diagnosis.
Intuitive also pointed to a multi-centre clinical study in Europe in 2025 that, it said, showed the system reached and sampled small, hard-to-access nodules safely and with high diagnostic accuracy. The release gives no figures from that study, no split of the 10,000 procedures by country and no European installed base.

Those gaps matter, because the European figure is the only regional number Intuitive chose to publish.
Why Europe is the market to watch
Intuitive tied the milestone to lung screening. As screening programmes spread across Europe, more potential cancers are found, Dirk Barten, Intuitive's commercial president for Europe, said in the release. More screening means more small nodules that need a biopsy, which is exactly the job Ion was built for. The company frames Ion as part of a portfolio with its da Vinci surgical systems, so a hospital that diagnoses a nodule with Ion can also resect it robotically.
How Ion compares with Intuitive's core business
MEKAWIRE's database puts the da Vinci installed base at 11,710 systems at June 30, 2026. Against that, the more than 1,000 Ion systems are at least 8.5% of the da Vinci fleet (MEKAWIRE calculation; the two counts are not dated identically). On the company's numbers, each installed Ion system did at most about 140 biopsies in 2025, an upper bound because the system count is a floor.

Ion is a second platform growing in the shadow of the first. The challengers MEKAWIRE tracks in surgical robotics, such as MicroPort MedBot and Edge Medical, compete with da Vinci in the operating theatre; none of them has a lung-biopsy robot in our records.
MEKAWIRE analysis
Ion's European milestone is a screening story: the system's growth in Europe will follow national lung screening programmes, not hospital robot budgets.
The evidence is in Intuitive's own framing. The release links the 10,000 procedures to the expansion of lung screening and to earlier diagnosis, not to new hospital customers or new indications. The strongest counter-argument is that screening produces nodules on scans, while biopsy pathways depend on reimbursement and capital budgets, so a hospital can join a screening programme and still biopsy with conventional tools.
Bull case: screening rollouts drive biopsy volumes, Ion procedures in Europe climb towards the global per-system rate, and hospitals buy Ion alongside da Vinci. Bear case: European volumes stay at a fraction of the US, as the 7% ratio suggests, and Ion remains a niche tool in a few centres.
What would change our view: Intuitive disclosing a European Ion installed base or procedure growth by country. Signals to watch are Intuitive's third-quarter results and any Ion placement and procedure figures in them, the publication of the European multi-centre study's data, and national screening decisions in large European markets.

Why it matters
Ion is Intuitive's second robot platform and its first outside the operating theatre. A European milestone matters because Europe is where lung screening is being rolled out programme by programme, which is the demand engine Intuitive itself names.
The ratio in the company's own numbers is the real news: three years of European use amount to about 7% of one year's global biopsies, which shows how concentrated Ion still is outside Europe.
Rival analysis
In MEKAWIRE's records the challengers to Intuitive, including MicroPort MedBot with Toumai and Edge Medical, compete with da Vinci in surgery rather than in robotic bronchoscopy. That leaves Ion's competition in Europe mainly with manual and navigational bronchoscopy, which is the comparison Intuitive draws.
The risk for Intuitive is less a rival robot than a hospital that decides conventional tools are good enough for the nodules screening finds.
Valuation context
The release carries no revenue figures. On the company's numbers each installed Ion did at most about 140 biopsies in 2025, which gives investors a usage ceiling to compare with the procedure growth Intuitive reports in its quarterly results.
With Ion at least 8.5% of the size of the da Vinci fleet by count, it remains a small part of an installed base whose economics are driven by recurring instruments and service.
Supply-chain implications
Ion is sold in Europe under its 2023 CE mark. The release does not say where the system is made and names no European manufacturing or supply partners.
For hospitals the binding constraint is less hardware supply than trained teams and biopsy pathways, which Intuitive addresses through training and its connected Ecosystem software.
Signals to watch
1. Intuitive's third-quarter 2026 results and any Ion placement and procedure figures. 2. Publication of data from the 2025 European multi-centre Ion study. 3. National lung screening decisions in large European markets that would raise biopsy demand.
Analyst view
Thesis: Ion in Europe is a screening play. Confidence: medium. The company's framing and the low European share support it, but without a European installed base we cannot separate new hospitals from more use per system.
We would raise confidence if Intuitive reports European procedure growth above its global rate, and lower it if European volumes stay flat as screening expands.
Questions you should be asking
How many Ion systems are installed in Europe and in which countries? What share of the 10,000 procedures came in 2026? What did the European multi-centre study measure, and when will it be published? How many Ion hospitals also run da Vinci?
