HD Hyundai said on Oct 19 that it had run a 368-ton uncrewed surface vessel off the Port of Long Beach with Anduril, combining its VAone naval autonomy system with Anduril's Lattice mission software. The converted US Navy test ship spent about 3.5 hours on autonomous navigation, mission changes, formation operations and an engine-failure response before about 40 observers from the US Navy, US Coast Guard, Korea's navy and others; no contract or price was disclosed.

HD Hyundai has taken a converted US Navy test ship to sea off California with no crew aboard and let two companies' software run it. The Korean shipbuilding group said on Oct 19 that it had recently held a joint demonstration with Anduril Industries, the US defence technology company, in which a 368-ton uncrewed surface vessel sailed off the Port of Long Beach under HD Hyundai's VAone autonomy system and Anduril's Lattice mission software. HD Hyundai called it the first such demonstration by a Korean company in US waters.

The statement was carried by Korean and English-language outlets on Oct 19, including The Korea Herald and Straight News; at publication it had not been posted on HD Hyundai's own press page, so the details below are the company's account as reported. What is at stake is whether a shipbuilder that sells hulls can also sell the autonomy inside them to the US Navy, a market where venture-funded American builders have raised billions this year.

What the ship did in three and a half hours

The demonstration ran for about 3.5 hours, according to the company. The vessel worked through scripted scenarios that included autonomous navigation, a change of mission while under way, formation operations and an emergency response to an engine failure. A shore-based control centre relayed the whole run, so that the roughly 40 observers could follow the vessel's decisions in real time.

Those observers included representatives of the US Navy, the US Coast Guard, the American Bureau of Shipping, the Republic of Korea Navy and Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration, as well as Anduril, HD Hyundai said. Chang Kwang-pil, executive vice president and head of HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering's future technology research institute, led the HD Hyundai side.

Two software stacks, one hull

The ship was a 368-ton large uncrewed surface test vessel previously operated by the US Navy and modified for the trial, the company said. It carried two systems. VAone is HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering's naval autonomy package. It is built on HiNAS Prime, the navigation system of Avikus, HD Hyundai's autonomous shipping subsidiary, and adds a machinery module that monitors engine condition, detects faults and responds automatically, plus a damage module that detects hull damage and acts on it.

Lattice is Anduril's mission autonomy platform. Combined, HD Hyundai said, the two covered navigation, machinery, damage control and weapons, which it described as the full set needed for a vessel with no one aboard. The split matters. HD Hyundai supplies the layer that keeps a ship alive and moving, and Anduril supplies the layer that decides what the ship is for. HD Hyundai did not disclose the demonstration date, latency figures, the name of the vessel or whether any weapon was fired rather than simulated.

Where the money in uncrewed boats has gone

In MEKAWIRE's records the uncrewed-vessel money is American. Saronic closed a $1.75 billion Series D at a $9.25 billion valuation on March 31, 2.31 times its Series C valuation, and has raised $2.58 billion across four rounds. Shield AI raised $1.5 billion at $12.7 billion days earlier, and Anduril itself announced a $5 billion Series H on May 13, 2.86 times Saronic's round. Saab and Sweden's FMV launched a large uncrewed underwater vehicle demonstrator on Oct 16. HD Hyundai is entering this field as a partner of one of those funded companies rather than as a rival to it.

MEKAWIRE analysis

HD Hyundai is not trying to out-Saronic Saronic. It is offering the US Navy a shipbuilder's autonomy for the hull and machinery, paired with Anduril's mission software, which is a bet that the Navy will buy uncrewed ships as large converted or newly built vessels rather than only as small venture-built boats.

The evidence is in the choice of ship and partner. A 368-ton vessel is a different class from the small craft that drove the early uncrewed-boat rounds, and engine-failure and damage handling are the problems a shipbuilder knows best. Pairing with Anduril gives HD Hyundai a US prime-contractor style partner whose software the Navy already sees. The strongest counter-argument is that a demonstration on a borrowed hull is not an order. Saronic is building its own shipyards and software, and nothing in the statement names a contract, a programme or a price.

In the bull case, the HD Hyundai and Anduril pairing wins a US uncrewed-vessel programme award, and VAone becomes a product Korean yards can fit to hulls they build for export. In the bear case, the Navy keeps buying from US-funded specialists, and the demonstration remains a showcase for a Korean group whose robotics revenue stays in industrial arms.

What would change our view is a named contract. Three signals matter: whether HD Hyundai publishes the release with the demonstration date and test data; whether the US Navy or Coast Guard names HD Hyundai or Anduril in an uncrewed surface vessel award within the next 12 months; and whether Avikus reports HiNAS Prime naval sales separately from its commercial ship autonomy business.

  1. 01

    Why it matters

Korean shipbuilders have sold hulls and maintenance to the US Navy for years; this is the first time HD Hyundai has shown the US services its own autonomy stack running a ship with no crew. If the Navy buys large uncrewed vessels, the value sits partly in software that keeps engines and hulls alive without sailors, which is where a shipbuilder has an edge.

The choice of Anduril as partner also signals that HD Hyundai does not expect to sell mission autonomy on its own in the US.

  2. 02

    Rival analysis

Saronic is the funded US specialist, with $2.58 billion raised over four rounds and its own shipyards. Anduril sits on both sides: it partners with HD Hyundai here, while its Lattice software and $5 billion Series H make it a prime-scale rival to every other autonomy vendor. Saab is building its own underwater autonomy in Sweden, and Hanwha, HD Hyundai's Korean rival, has taken the investor route through HavocAI.

HD Hyundai's differentiator is machinery and damage autonomy, which small-boat start-ups have less reason to build.

  3. 03

    Valuation context

HD Hyundai is a listed group and the demonstration carries no revenue or contract value. The comparison that matters is the private-market price of the same capability: Saronic at $9.25 billion and Shield AI at $12.7 billion. Investors are paying those multiples for companies with production contracts, so HD Hyundai's naval autonomy is unlikely to be valued by the market until it has one.

  4. 04

    Supply-chain implications

The stack is split between Korea and the US. Navigation autonomy comes from Avikus, an HD Hyundai subsidiary, and machinery and damage autonomy from HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering. Mission control comes from Anduril. The hull in the trial was a US Navy vessel, which keeps the platform American and puts the Korean contribution in software.

  5. 05

    Signals to watch

Publication of the release on HD Hyundai's press page with the demonstration date and test data. Any US Navy or Coast Guard uncrewed surface vessel award that names HD Hyundai or Anduril in the next 12 months. Whether Avikus reports naval HiNAS Prime revenue separately from its commercial business.

  6. 06

    Analyst view

Thesis: HD Hyundai is selling shipbuilder autonomy alongside Anduril's mission software, betting that the Navy buys large uncrewed vessels and not only small venture-built boats. Confidence: low to medium. The technical claim is plausible and the observer list is serious, but there is no contract, no data and no primary release yet.

  7. 07

    Questions you should be asking

When was the demonstration held, and how many of the scenarios ran without operator intervention? Who owns the integration between VAone and Lattice, and under which export rules? Is HD Hyundai bidding with Anduril for a specific US programme, and would the hulls be built in Korea or in the US?
