Korean lidar perception start-up Vueron Technology has signed a memorandum of understanding with telecom operator KT to develop and commercialise a lidar-based road management system, according to a report by trade outlet Hello T on Oct 19 citing the company; Vueron has not posted the announcement on its own site.

The plan mounts Vueron's Copilot autonomous-driving perception kit on public vehicles that already run fixed routes, such as buses, street sweepers and snowplows, so road damage is measured in 3D during normal service, including pothole depth and area at night, where camera systems are fooled by shadows and stains.

KT adds its RTX Fast precise positioning to place each defect to the lane, sends data over LTE to its Cloudflex cloud, and the two firms aim for a map-based control screen that ranks repairs by risk; no pilot city, deal value or timeline was given.

The deal moves another Korean lidar company from cars into public infrastructure, after SOS Lab's solid-state lidar for smart parking that MEKAWIRE covered on Oct 15.

Good or bad news for the company?
