About

Agtonomy is based in South San Francisco and Sonoma County, California, and was founded in 2021, according to Kubota. It is led by chief executive Tim Bucher. It describes itself as a farmer-founded software, services and technology company that builds autonomy for agriculture, aimed at labour shortages, climate change and thin margins. Rather than build its own tractors, it embeds its self-driving and AI systems in machines made by equipment manufacturers, including Bobcat and Kubota, and it also targets other off-road and industrial equipment. On 19 December 2023 Agtonomy announced a $22.5 million Series A led by Momenta, joined by the strategic investors Doosan Bobcat North America and Toyota Ventures. On 16 October 2024 it said it had raised an additional $10 million to close the Series A, led by Autotech Ventures with new investors Rethink Food, Allison Transmission and Black Forest Ventures and existing backers Toyota Ventures, Flybridge and Cavallo Partners, which brought its total funding to $32.8 million. It said that money would grow its West Coast team, expand its paid pilot programme for permanent crops in 2025 and take its automation into other industrial sectors. On 22 April 2026 Kubota said it had invested in Agtonomy, building on a partnership the two began in 2024, without giving the amount.
