FarmWise
Salinas, California maker of AI-guided mechanical weeders for vegetable farms, first offered as the Titan weeding service and now sold as the Vulcan implement line.
FarmWise is based in Salinas, California, in the Salinas Valley vegetable belt, and also lists an office in Santa Clara. Co-founder Sebastien Boyer is chief executive. The company builds weeding machines that use computer vision and robotics to tell crops from weeds and remove weeds mechanically rather than with herbicides. Its first machine, Titan, was an automated mechanical weeder that FarmWise ran as a service, and by mid-2022 it said it had logged 15,000 commercial hours, built a database of more than 450 million scanned images of individual crops and worked with 30 farms in California and Arizona. Its current line, Vulcan, is an intra-row weeder and precision cultivator that the company says covers up to three acres an hour, and it has an exclusive partnership with RDO Equipment Co. to sell precision weeding in specialty crops. On 1 June 2022 FarmWise announced an oversubscribed $45 million Series B led by Fall Line Capital and Middleland Capital, with GV and Taylor Farms joining existing investors Calibrate Ventures, Playground Global, SVG Ventures and the venture arm of Wilbur-Ellis. It said the round brought total equity raised to $65 million and that the money would speed up its vegetable weeding roadmap, extend service to more farms and develop capabilities for row crops. Clay Mitchell of Fall Line Capital joined the board.
