About

Dexai Robotics was founded in 2018 as a spin-out from The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, growing out of a research collaboration in AI for robotics among researchers at Draper, MIT and Harvard, and it is based in Boston. Its co-founders are chief executive David Johnson and chief financial officer Anthony Tayoun. Its flagship product Alfred is a collaborative robot arm that uses standard kitchen utensils, AI and computer vision to prepare dishes such as salads, bowls, ice cream sundaes and sushi in existing kitchens without changes to layouts or recipes. On March 5, 2020 Dexai announced an oversubscribed $5.5 million seed round led by Hyperplane Venture Capital, with new investors Rho Capital, Harlem Capital, Contour Venture Partners and NextView Ventures participating. In February 2022 it announced a $1.6 million contract with the Defense Logistics Agency for 10 Alfred robots in a pilot at military dining facilities, the first at the Monarch Dining Facility at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California, which serves more than 950 customers a day.
