Labrador Systems
Los Angeles developer of the Labrador Retriever, a home robot that carries and fetches items for people with limited mobility and takes commands from a phone app or Alexa.
Labrador Systems is a Los Angeles company founded by Mike Dooley and Nikolai Romanov, who both worked on consumer robots at Evolution Robotics and iRobot before starting it. It builds assistive robots for the home aimed at people who find it hard to move things around their living space. Its main product, the Labrador Retriever, can carry loads such as a laundry basket through tight rooms and uses a built-in retrieval system to pick up items, and users direct it from a smartphone or by voice through Alexa. The company has also described a simpler entry model called the Labrador Caddie, and it says it received a National Science Foundation Phase I SBIR grant in 2021. On 15 October 2019 Labrador said it had closed a $2 million pre-seed round led by HAX, the hardware accelerator run by SOSV, which it said worked in partnership with Centrica Hive on the deal. Amazon's Alexa Fund, iRobot Ventures and iD Ventures America also took part, and the money was meant for platform development and pilot studies with partners in 2020. On 4 January 2022, during CES in Las Vegas, it announced a further $3.1 million in seed funding co-led by the Alexa Fund and iRobot Ventures, with SOSV coming back and Grep VC joining as a new investor. That money was set aside for consumer and commercial expansion, a bigger engineering team and work with manufacturing partners, and the company said at the time that it planned full production in the second half of 2023.
