Canvas
San Francisco construction robotics company that built a robot for drywall finishing, whose core technology JLG acquired in January 2026.
Canvas was founded in 2017 in San Francisco by veterans of Boston Dynamics, MIT and Stanford and started as a spinoff of the research lab Otherlab; co-founder Kevin Albert is chief executive. Its system pairs trained union finishers with a robot that applies and sands drywall compound, and the company works as a drywall finishing subcontractor signed to District Council 16 of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades. Before its public launch on 19 November 2020 its crews worked on projects including Harvey Milk Terminal 1 at San Francisco International Airport, and at launch it said it had raised $19 million to date from investors including Innovation Endeavors, Obvious Ventures, Brick & Mortar Ventures and Grit Ventures. On 15 April 2021 it announced a $24 million Series B led by Menlo Ventures, with a strategic investment from Suffolk Construction, participation from Alumni Ventures Group and existing investors Innovation Endeavors, Brick & Mortar Ventures, Obvious Ventures and Grit Labs. In July 2024 it launched the 1200CX, a compact finishing robot weighing 1,200 pounds. In January 2026 JLG Industries, an Oshkosh Corporation business, said it had acquired the core technology developed by Canvas and welcomed Canvas team members; terms were not disclosed.
