Starship Technologies
San Francisco operator of small autonomous sidewalk robots that deliver food and groceries on campuses and in city neighbourhoods.
Starship Technologies was founded in 2014 by Skype co-founders Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis. It has its global headquarters in San Francisco and its original office in Tallinn, Estonia. The company runs fleets of small autonomous robots that travel on sidewalks to bring food and groceries to customers, first on university campuses and increasingly in city neighbourhoods. In October 2025 it said more than 2,700 of its robots were working at over 270 locations in seven countries, that they had completed more than 9 million deliveries, and that it aimed to grow the fleet past 12,000 robots by 2027. Its disclosed financing began with a $17.2 million seed round led by Daimler AG in January 2017, followed by $25 million in additional seed funding in June 2018, when Lex Bayer became chief executive, and a $40 million Series A led by Morpheus Ventures in August 2019 that was tied to a plan to reach 100 university campuses. In February 2024 it raised $90 million co-led by Plural and Iconical, which it said took its total funding since 2014 to $230 million. In October 2025 it announced a $50 million Series C led by Plural to push further into U.S. cities, grow the robot fleet and deepen ties with large retailers.
