Robot demand in Q3 2026 by region: China output up about 30%, Japan orders at a record
Official statistics for July to September 2026 show China's industrial robot output growing 18.9% to 34.6% a month and Japan Robot Association orders at a record JPY 325.4 billion, up 46.6%. The US, Korea and Germany published no quarterly robot statistic, so their quarter is read from company filings.
MEKAWIRE found that China's own Q3 figures differ by 34,511 units depending on which NBS release is used, and that FANUC's robot sales in China fell 14.3% while Chinese output rose.
Robot demand in the third quarter of 2026 was measured officially in only two of the five largest markets. China's National Bureau of Statistics reported industrial robot output up 30.2% in July, 34.6% in August and 18.9% in September, and the Japan Robot Association (JARA) reported record member orders of JPY 325.4 billion, up 46.6%. For the United States, Korea and Germany no quarterly statistic was published or readable by Oct 30, so this report reads their quarter from company filings and states the gap.
The two official series do not measure the same thing. NBS counts sets produced by industrial enterprises above a size threshold; JARA counts orders and shipments by its member companies in yen, chip mounters included. Neither is a count of robots installed. The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) supplies that count once a year, and its 2025 figures are the base used here. What follows is what each region's numbers say, where they disagree, and what they imply for suppliers.
Latest from MEKAWIRE
- Doosan Robotics Q3 sales fall 8.5% on quarter to KRW 16.2bn as loss stays 83% of revenue
- Teradyne Robotics turns profitable in Q3 on $96M revenue, though sales slip 4% from Q2
- Unitree Q3: revenue up 70% to RMB665M, profit down 17% as R&D jumps 250%
- Unitree and HongShan launch Shanyu plan to back early embodied-AI startups
- Doosan Robotics commits KRW 40bn to a Doosan venture fund, 11.5% of its equity
China: growth confirmed, acceleration depends on the release you read
NBS monthly releases put Q3 industrial robot output at 291,603 sets (98,677 in July, 96,174 in August, 96,752 in September). The cumulative figures in the same releases tell a different story: 537,689 sets for January to June and 794,781 for January to September, a Q3 difference of only 257,092. The gap is 34,511 sets, 11.8% of the monthly sum. NBS states cumulative growth on a comparable basis and does not reconcile the two series in its releases.

The choice matters. On the monthly figures, average output in Q3 was 97,201 sets a month, 8.5% above the first-half average of 89,615. On the cumulative difference it was 85,697 a month, 4.4% below. Year-on-year growth is not in doubt: every month of the quarter was up by double digits, and nine-month output already exceeds the 773,074 sets made in all of 2025, as MEKAWIRE reported on Oct 19. Service robots turned: September output fell 17.8% from a year earlier after gains of 5.7% and 5.0%, and nine-month growth slowed to 7.9% from 11.9% at mid-year.
The filings show who supplies that demand. Unitree's Q3 revenue rose 69.9% to RMB 665.0 million. FANUC, the largest foreign robot maker in China, reported robot sales in China of JPY 18.1 billion for July to September, down 14.3% from a year earlier and 32.0% from the second quarter. In 2025, Chinese brands already supplied 55% of the 354,000 robots installed in China, according to the IFR, which ranks China first with 59% of world installations.
Japan: record orders, mostly for export
JARA's quarterly statistics show orders rising in each quarter of 2026, and the order-to-shipment ratio climbing from 1.17 to 1.23, which means the backlog is growing. Nine-month orders of JPY 932.9 billion already exceed the JPY 925.8 billion of all of 2025.

The domestic market is the smaller part. Domestic shipments were JPY 48.2 billion in Q3, up 16.3%, with car plants buying more for the first time in seven quarters. Exports took about JPY 216.5 billion of the JPY 264.7 billion shipped, roughly 82%, a MEKAWIRE derivation because JARA's Q3 page repeats the unit figure in the export value line; chip mounters were about half of that. Japan installed only 36,219 robots in 2025, a decade low, which the Japan market explainer covers in detail. FANUC's own robot orders rose 12.6% to JPY 103.4 billion in the quarter.
United States, Korea and Germany: no quarterly statistic
The Association for Advancing Automation publishes North American robot orders, but MEKAWIRE could not read its Q3 release, so it is left out rather than quoted second-hand. The US installed 38,400 robots in 2025, up 12%, per the IFR. In the filings, Teradyne's robotics segment (Universal Robots and MiR) had Q3 revenue of USD 96 million, down 3.9% from Q2, while Intuitive placed 546 da Vinci systems against 427 a year earlier, a 27.9% rise in surgical robots that no factory statistic captures.
Korea, with 30,000 installations in 2025, has no quarterly robot statistic from KIRIA or KOSIS that MEKAWIRE could find. Doosan Robotics' Q3 revenue rose 59.1% to KRW 16.175 billion, but its operating loss equalled 82.9% of sales. Germany installed 24,800 robots in 2025; VDMA forecast in February that German robotics and automation revenue would fall 5% to EUR 14.1 billion in 2026 and has issued no quarterly update.

MEKAWIRE analysis
Q3 2026 demand was strongest where it is counted in Chinese units and Japanese yen orders, and the two series point at each other: China's factories made about 30% more industrial robots while FANUC's robot sales in China fell 14%, so Chinese demand is increasingly met by Chinese output, and Japan's record order book depends on exports.
The evidence is the combination of NBS output growth, the IFR's 55% domestic-brand share for 2025 and FANUC's quarterly China decline. The strongest counter-argument is measurement: NBS sets include low-cost units, the series disagrees with itself by 34,511 sets, and one supplier's quarter is not a market share. FANUC's China sales also fell 32% from Q2, which may reflect timing of large car-plant orders rather than lost share.
Bull case: Japanese orders at a 1.23 ratio to shipments turn into domestic installations in 2027 as car plants resume buying, and Chinese output keeps double-digit growth with exports absorbing the surplus. Bear case: September's slowdown to 18.9% and the fall in service robots mark the top of China's cycle, and Japanese orders tied to chip mounters weaken with the electronics cycle.
Method: China Q3 is shown both as the sum of NBS monthly output and as the difference between the January to September and January to June cumulative figures. Japan figures are JARA member data; export value is total shipments minus domestic shipments. Units, currencies and definitions differ across regions and are not added together. All figures are as published, as of Oct 30, 2026.
Signals to watch: the NBS October output release in mid-November, which will show whether September's slowdown continues; JARA's October to December statistics in late January 2027; and FANUC's October to December China robot sales, due with its results in late January.
