Blind Precise Assembly: Proprioceptive Sim-to-Real Peg-in-Hole for Diverse Parts
A robot arm with no camera, no force sensor and no touch sensor seated 3D-printed pegs into holes with 0.5 to 1.5 mm of clearance in 173 of 237 real trials (73%), using only its own joint encoders, according to a preprint from MIT. The policy was trained entirely in simulation and transferred without fine-tuning, and in simulation it also learned gear meshing and nut threading.
